The company is owned by Mike Bradwell, who is a qualified garden designer.

He has gained expertise in all aspects of landscaping by designing and building unique gardens for clients within the Leicestershire area, during a successful career of over 20 years.

Green Garden With Flowers
In 1999 Mike decided to leave a senior role as a production engineer to begin Barrow Landscapes. He had formerly been employed to plan and organise the manufacturing facilities for two large engineering companies in Leicestershire but had also been able to invest his spare time in building extensions and landscaping gardens for family and friends. The training and expertise that he gained as an engineer, along with a flare for design, gave him the confidence to follow his ambitions. Having gained qualifications from Brooksby College in garden design and horticulture, he applied all of his talents to establishing Barrow Landscapes, a landscaping company based in leicestershire, that gained a great reputation for its high level of workmanship, attention to detail and customer care.
Mike is now focusing on the garden design side of the business. He also has a great team of independent professionals who he can call upon and recommend to build the garden, plant and even maintain it once built, if so required.

The Garden Design Process

1. Initial Consultation

This is an informal meeting with the client and a review of the existing garden. It allows Mike to gain an understanding of the client's brief and aspirations. It is an opportunity to establish which features they would like to have included and the style of garden that they would prefer.

Any photos of features and planting schemes that they have been inspired by, along with Mike's own suggestions and expertise will help to gain an understanding of the client’s vision for their outdoor space.

2. The Garden Survey

A garden survey is carried out by taking photos, measurements, assessing levels, considering boundaries, neighbouring buildings and any existing features to be included.

Any drainage issues, aspect, soil type, views to enhance or to hide will all be considered at this stage.

3. Garden Design Plan

With all of this information and a touch of artistic license a 2-dimensional, hand drawn, coloured and scaled plan is produced showing all features, hard landscaping along with material specifications.

Modifications can be made at this stage until the client is happy with the final plan.

4. Building the Garden

The completed garden design will have sufficient detail for the client to obtain quotations and for their selected landscaper to build their garden. Recommendations can be made for independent, experienced landscapers who, once commissioned, will construct the garden to a high standard.

Arguably, the most important part of any garden is the planting scheme. Plants soften the hard landscaping, bringing it to life, whilst adding colour, texture, interest, fragrance and providing a home for wild life.

Mike can advise and supply plant lists for all styles and conditions. Alternatively, his team of independent landscapers are also qualified to discuss, source and plant the borders.

He is also able to recommend a good gardener to maintain the finished garden if required.

Recent Projects

Contemporary New Build Garden

This garden was designed and built at the end of 2018.

The brief was to convert the sloping garden into more manageable, levelled sections with multiple sitting areas, to be able to enjoy the garden from different vantage positions.

It was eventually designed and built on four levels using sleeper retainers with low maintenance borders and a contemporary feel.

Terraced Woodland Garden

Back in 2006 this garden was almost unusable, with its pronounced slope and a preservation order on two very established beech trees. It was redesigned and built forming three levelled areas with curved retaining walls and steps from wooden sleepers secured on end.

Three circular lawns were formed as a striking element of the second level and the curved theme continued on the lower level with a circular patio and curved lawn.

Compact Split Level Garden

Built in 2009, this garden was designed on two levels and although quite small was packed with interesting features, the main focal point being a raised, red brick pond with slate monolith water feature.

Victorian Garden

This garden was completed in 2010. It was designed with a Victorian cottage garden theme, in keeping with this old Victorian property.

The use of grey Millstone paving for the main patio within the lower section, paths and circular sitting area on the upper tier compliments the red brick house. The main focal point is the bespoke gazebo.

The granite stone wall and steps across the garden retains the upper tier.

Family & Entertainment Garden

This garden involves a sunken trampoline and a large raised patio area. The emphasis was on low maintenance, entertaining, children and pets. The patio retaining wall and steps were built in red facing bricks to match the property. A sweeping path links the main patio and a circular sitting area under a wooden pergola at the bottom of the garden.
